The
Australasian Nutrition Advisory Council (ANAC®) have recently
released their first publications regarding Food for
Cancer Prevention. They have developed information for
both health professionals and consumers on this topic. The
ANAC group aim to produce further publications on other nutrition
issues in the future.
ANAC "Food for Cancer Prevention
An Australasian Perspective
The
ANAC Food for Cancer Prevention publication for
health professionals provides a comprehensive guide to reducing
the impact of diet-related cancers in the Australasian community.
The publication is based on the 1997 World Cancer Research
Fund (WCRF) and American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR)
report on Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer:
a Global Perspective and the dietary recommendations
arising from the report. The members of ANAC found this report
a valuable reference point in their deliberations about advice
for Australians and New Zealanders. To reinterpret the WCRF
report for Australia and New Zealand, and more specifically
its recommendations, the Council took into account the standards
of evidence, which were employed by the WCRF panel. ANAC considered
the approach, analysis and evidence rating employed by the
WCRF to be scientifically rigorous, but not always applicable
to the local situation. The ANAC report, however, not only
modifies the advice to suit the region, but also takes into
account other important matters.
To
support the Health Professionals publication, ANAC have also
produced a consumer brochure which summarises the dietary
recommendations and provides practical information including
meal plans and recipes.
